Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch

Rolf Borzik, scenographer and Pina Bausch’s partner, died on 27 January 1980. In May of that year, the première of ‘1980 - een stuk van Pina Bausch’ took place. Peter Pabst, Peter Zadek’s scenographer, designed the set. As you come in, the auditorium smells of spring. The stage resembles an open-air playground. Before your eyes, an authentic parade of themes that lie close to Pina Bausch’s heart unfolds. An evocation of children’s games, childhood memories, small talk at parties, social rituals, but also of loneliness. ‘1980 - een stuk van Pina Bausch’ is about saying goodbye, loneliness, mourning and death. With this highly personal performance, Pina Bausch transformed the theatre into a place of contemplation, where alongside caprice and humour, there is also room for mourning and grief.
