Tanztheater Wuppertal, which from September 2022 will be led by the French choreographer Boris Charmatz, revives an early masterpiece by Pina Bausch. Since 1994 her choreography Blaubart has been unable to be performed due to the strict copyright on the music of Béla Bartók. Nevertheless it is regarded as one of Bausch’s most radical and uncompromising works. A true break with the conventional dance aesthetic of that era. With her deeply human gaze, Bausch unravels the relationship between Duke Bluebeard, who murders women in his castle, and his last wife Judith. A 27-strong cast of dancers gives voice to the couple’s turbulent psyche and the battle of the sexes like a Greek chorus. 45 years after it was invented, this emotionally piece about sexual obsession and abuse of power takes on a fresh relevance.
