1h 40' Two Pina Bausch masterpieces in one evening! Two works from her early years: 'Café Müller' from 1978, followed by 'Le Sacre du Printemps' from 1975. After founding Tanztheater Wuppertal in 1973, Pina Bausch inspired audiences around the world. Long before her death in 2009, she was considered to be the most influential choreographer of our time.
'Café Müller' is permeated with melancholy, not least as a result of Henry Purcell's music. In a closed space, two women - in transparent white slips and with their eyes closed - and three men bump into tables and chairs. In 'Le Sacre du Printemps' the battle between the sexes is enacted in a lascivious, frenzied, almost violent way. The whole choreography revolves around the sacrifice of a young woman. The ensemble, who are assisted by student-wizards from the Folkwang Schule, entirely fills the stage. They dance barefoot, their feet in a black peat-like earth. This lends a timeless, archaic character to the battlefield. To the backdrop of Stravinsky's stirring music, urges come to a breathtaking climax. Dancing to raise the dead, or as the choreographer herself implored: "Dance, dance, or all is lost".
