Vincent Dupont - J' y pense souvent (...)
Air
You will no doubt remember Vincent Dupont from his work during the dedonderdagen in 2008. He made a deep impression on us all with 'Hauts Cris (Miniature)', a strange performance in which light, scenography and sound combined to create a haunting experience. This season, this French choreographer and theatre-maker will finally be returning to deSingel with 'Air'.
In this new project, which we are co-producing, he examines how voice and movement influence one another and can lead to a trance. His inspiration for this was Jean Rouch's film 'Les tambours d'avant'. This filmmaker and ethnologist travelled to a Nigerian village in order to film a local ritual. Even though it took a long time for the ritual to begin, Rouch still decided to have the camera rolling the whole time. When an old woman finally went into a trance, Rouch decided to give his film a new twist, and to allow the viewer to imagine the rest of the dance for himself. This is precisely what Vincent Dupont does in 'Air': he dances for you, along with a female partner, and accompanied by four singers who sit behind the audience.
