William Forsythe . Ballet de l' Opéra de Lyon
Mixed Bill: 'Second Detail', 'Duo', 'One flat thing, reproduced'
After the much acclaimed 'Impressing the Czar', we now have a second evening of William Forsythe's dance repertoire on the programme. For 'Mixed Bill', the renowned Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon will be our guests at deSingel for the first time. This choreographer, the most European of all Americans, deconstructs and reconstructs the classical canon. He does it by fragmenting not only the dance, but also the light, the space and the sound. To the hypnotic cadences of the resident composer Thom Willems, the Lyon Ballet shows a selection of William ('Bill') Forsythe's rich repertoire, comprising two group works and a duet. 'Second Detail', 'Duo' and 'One flat thing, reproduced' show Forsythe's development from 1991 to 2000.
'Second Detail' is classic in its arrangement and still shows signs of the influence of Balanchine. 'Duo', danced by two female dancers, is a small-scale masterpiece. Lastly, 'One flat thing, reproduced' is the most recent piece, one in which the dancers appear and disappear on, next to and under tables, in rapid virtuoso movements.
