Do you have an ongoing interest in the work of Wim Vandekeybus? Or have you never had the opportunity to see a production by this world-class Flemish choreographer? Spiegel offers you the unique chance of seeing twenty years of his work in one evening. Vandekeybus presents us with a selection of notable scenes from his oeuvre. In 1987 he created his first performance, What the body does not remember, together with his company Ultima Vez. It was a hit. The dancers threw bricks into the air and remained standing where they were until they were pulled away from the spot by another dancer who then caught the falling stone. However rough and careless it appeared to be, each movement required the greatest precision and timing. Danger, pure catastrophe, and the instinct and precision of almost animal movements continued to be key concepts in Vandekeybus' work. However, physical body language gradually became embedded in a larger whole. Text and film and video images began to play a greater role. Once a student of psychology, Vandekeybus' interest focused on the complex relationship between body and mind. Imaginary elements began to creep into his work. Twenty years on and with almost as many creations to his name since his debut, Vandekeybus looks into the mirror and seeks the essence of his artistic idiom.
