For his 'Performance Hotel' project, the choreographer and dancer David Hernandez is inviting several artists, kindred spirits, to work together on an artistic circuit. It is a dialogue, a framework for discussion, study and artistic development, and the chance to put the public in contact with very varied performances and art forms.
Hernandez has already been working on the project for several years in various cities including Amsterdam and Brussels. This time his host is Antwerp. He will enter into this dialogue together with Renate Graziadei and a large cast that includes choreographers, directors, musicians, artists, theorists and technicians, plus, in Antwerp, a special joint-venture with the students of Antwerp Polytechnic's Higher Dance Institute.
This circuit, with its live installations, will occupy many parts of the building. Some of the works are new and have been created specially for this occasion and location, while others are revisions of previous editions of 'Performance Hotel'.
Piles
The writhing of naked bodies, piling themselves up, tumbling apart again ore merging together. Various scenes constantly form and transform in a space where time stretches and shrinks.
Box
Call it a human zoo. The public can go into the box three at a time and are given a video camera that records what they see. These images are projected onto the outside of the box.
Angels
Lying in the grass, you see virtual dancers floating across the ceiling to the tones of live music played by composers invited for the occasion.
Musical chairs
Ten chairs equipped with headphones and soundtracks. Dancers improvise in silence to a score based on what can be heard in the headphones. The audience is as it were complicit in a private dance happening in a public space.
