How do contemporary designers view the building practices of the past? In the sixth edition of the exhibition series Unfolding the Archives, the design firm Rotor transports you into the world of Marcel Raymaekers (b. 1933). As a pioneer of circular construction, Rotor explores how from the 1960s onwards Raymaekers developed designs using almost exclusively recovered materials. With photos, drawings and newspaper articles, Rotor shows how Raymaekers’ collected materials such as Maas cobblestones, ship steel, domes from fighter jets, natural stone bay windows and steel neo-Gothic columns and converted them into completely new constructions. His designs stand out thanks to their boldness and radicality. Come and discover Raymaekers’ work and be surprised by the unlimited possibilities of circular construction.
The exhibition is part of a study by Rotor in collaboration with UGent. The Flanders Architecture Institute documents and exhibits the results. A monograph about Raymaekers’ work is being published to coincide with the exhibition.
