Take a look around you. It’s very likely that you’ll be looking out over a densely built-up landscape. Our surroundings appear to be literally fixed, and yet we can also read these existing lines as an invitation to continue drawing. The Festival of architecture 2023 embraces the surroundings and views them as a playing field that is begging to be entered. Because if anyone is taking an in-depth look at our surroundings, then it is architects. More and more often, their role is to intervene in existing buildings. They no longer delete history, but take it with them in their design. Architects continue to build, literally display the different layers of history. Old rules are replaced by new norms. But what happens when we question these rules? Is everyone allowed to do that? During the Festival of architecture, we look at things in a different light. What does a visual artist or theatre maker see when they look at our surroundings? What does a child see? And what do you see? For a whole week, the Festival of architecture is a sanctuary without rules. We try things out, experiment and learn. If something works, we take it with us. If something doesn’t work, then it was an interesting investigation. Whatever the outcome is, amusement is guaranteed!
