1h From Baroque to South Africa: cellist Abel Selaocoe bridges worlds with voice and rhythm
The South African cellist Abel Selaocoe is a leading voice in the reinvention of classical music. He explores the boundaries of the cello and moves effortlessly between diverse genres and styles, from collaborations with world and jazz musicians, to concerts and solo performances. Selaocoe combines virtuosity with improvisation, vocals and body percussion; and as well as composing work, devises programmes that illuminate the connection between Western and non-Western music cultures. In this way, he expands the horizons of classical music and introduces it to a broader and more diverse audience.
In November 2025, Selaocoe returns to DE SINGEL with a series of creations, including a new work written in collaboration with the Dutch composer Michel van der Aa. Van der Aa is known for his innovative approach to composition and his collaborations with soloists.
