Alex Koo
The young Belgian-Japanese pianist Alex Koo has been causing a furore for a few years now. The American magazine Downbeat described his album Appleblueseagreen with greats Ralph Alessi and Mark Turner as ‘stunningly original’ and put it in its top 10 of 2019. The album Identified Flying Object is also outstanding. Alex Koo began playing the piano at the age of four and was primed for a career as a classical concert pianist. And yet the desire to compose and improvise himself persisted and he switched to jazz. Composers such as Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninov and Steve Reich continue to be an unending source of inspiration. This can clearly be heard in the series Piano Etudes which he composed with conventional and less conventional piano techniques. March 2023 will see the release of Alex Koo’s first solo album, which he presents during this concert.
