“This is the best thing I have ever experienced”, Mozart wrote to his father. The Quintet for Piano and Winds is indeed a masterpiece. Beethoven thought so too.
He drew inspiration for his own quintet from it, and opted for exactly the same line-up as Mozart, as well as the same key and the same sequence of parts. By comparison to Mozart’s Quintet, Beethoven’s is more ambitious in its scope. Both Quintets are delightful pieces of music. Colourful, sparkling and energetic. Played on a Lagrasse pianoforte from 1815 and historic wind instruments, this music is particularly fine. And with five first-class musicians, this promises to be the best performance you have ever heard.
