If you were around for the Dvorák Happening two seasons ago, then you will certainly remember the amazing performance by the 'Dumky Trio': the playing of Isabelle Faust, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Alexander Melnikov was out of this world. In this new concert they will present a few highlights from the piano trio repertoire. With 'Papa' Haydn at the helm, who developed the piano trio as a form in its own right, transferring it from the living room to the concert hall, just as he did with the string quartet. Whereas in Haydn, the piano part was still dominant and the cello, for the most part, enhanced the piano's bass, Beethoven treated the three instruments equally. In particular, his two piano trios, opus 70, achieve the perfect balance between piano and strings.
It was upon these foundations that such Romantic composers as Schumann could solidly build. On the subject of this Second Piano Trio, Clara Schumann wrote in her diary: 'It is among those pieces by Robert which, from beginning to end, move me to the depths of my soul. I passionately love this music and always want to play it again and again'. When it is placed in the hands of Melnikov, Faust and Queyras we will want to hear it over and over again!
