‘A reverie in the moonlight of a beautiful spring evening’, is how Chopin described the second part of his Piano Concerto No. 1. Issuing forth notes brimming with swirling stardust, the piano keys feel like vocal cords. They sing, floating high above the tempo, free and luxuriant like the best bel canto arias. It is precisely this song-like tone that pianist Alexej Volodin manages to strike with his sensitive touch and discreet virtuosity. Conductor Marzena Diakun brings a punchy personal resonance: just like Chopin, she left Poland to forge a career in France. Chopin’s fragile melancholy contrasts beautifully with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8. Music like a life-affirming kiss.
