The Swiss Andreas Haefliger is a pianist who might easily be overlooked, since he has not positioned himself in the spotlight, but has focused rather on the integrity of the music. His feeling for architectural clarity and his desire to take risks makes him an interesting performer. The next couple of years sees him touring the world with a series of concerts entitled 'Perspectives of Beethoven'. Unlike many of his other colleagues, Haefliger's does not perform the complete 32 Beethoven sonatas. Each recital receives a well-balanced dramaturgy in which Haefliger combines one or more of the sonatas with pieces from the repertoire by other masters such as Schubert or Brahms. He attempts to cast new light on our understanding of the composer, but it will be interesting to see just how Schubert's last sonata pairs with Beethoven's idyllic 'Pastorale' and the tempestuous 'Appassionata'.
