Jos van Immerseel returns to his roots with the work of a composer who signalled the start of a new era and style, the Baroque. In his last books of madrigals, Monteverdi abandons the limitations of Renaissance practice. He wants to give musical form to the most powerful emotions and explore new techniques. The musical strategy of the ‘genere rappresentativo’ attempts to represent the text as closely as possible. This leads to colourful passages with almost realistic sound effects. In ‘Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda’ we hear horses galloping past and the clashing of swords. Monteverdi is looking for ways to make the whispering, shouting and yearning of his characters almost tangible. It is a thread that runs from the early masterpiece ‘L’Orfeo’ to the late opera ‘Il ritorno d’Ulisse’ (The Return of Ulysses). This programme strings together the highlights. Do not miss it.
