In summer 1788, over a period of less than two months, Mozart wrote three symphonies that form a veritable compendium of instrumental mastery. This concert takes a close look at the essence of this undertaking. The symphonies also mark the end point of Mozart’s voyage of discovery through the counterpoint of Handel and Bach that so fascinated him in the 1780s. Elegantly, playfully and with apparent nonchalance, he demonstrates his great erudition. Jos van Immerseel and his unsurpassed ensemble would have been ideal associates for him. Their performance of the late symphonies bubbles with vitality. Moreover, with the Bassoon Concerto we are offered a delicious addition. In this cheerful and lyrical work, Jane Gower conjures up the most beautiful colours with her Baroque bassoon. The perfect start to a summery spring evening!
