The dramatic overture to ‘Die Zauberharfe’, better known as ‘Rosamunde’, emerged from dark times for Schubert. Throughout his life, he stood in Beethoven’s shadow and had to contend with the strict German musical culture. And yet he is unparalleled in his pursuit of lyricism. Carl Maria von Weber drew inspiration from the honeyed sounds of the clarinet. His Clarinet Concerto translates the Sturm-und-Drang emotions of the time into a whirlwind dialogue. Before the ink was dry on Schubert’s ‘Great’, he slowly felt his life ebbing away. His final heroic deed was a matchless masterpiece, an ode to his life and work. Anima Eterna Brugge, conducted by Jos van Immerseel, lives up to its name and breathes new life into the soul of these works.
