Are you familiar with the works that Schubert wrote for violin and piano? The chances are probably quite slim. During his lifetime he was known as the 'Prince of Song' and that image has been preserved up to the present. A large portion of Schubert's instrumental works have not received a lot of attention. The six works he wrote for violin and piano: three sonatinas, the Sonata in A major, the Fantasy in C major and the brilliant Rondo in B minor, have not yet entered the canon of great works for the concert repertoire. This is probably due to their great difficulty. In terms of both virtuosity and interpretation, Schubert placed extremely rigorous demands on the players. The German violinist Antje Weithaas and pianist Silke Avenhaus have devoted their latest CD to this repertoire. The typical fragility of Schubert's early romantic music is in good hands here. Without disturbing the fluent melodic line with theatrical gestures, they allow the many emotional layers to rise to the surface. It's pure magic!
