Apsara - Ann Saelens
Het oor is piece of narrative music-theatre for children of six years and older, based on a humorous piece by Toon Tellegen, about an ant and a squirrel who construct a giant ear so they can hear the world better. After all, there are so many sounds around us that do not get through to us, and you only hear more if you make an effort.
Dominique Pauwels, known for the title music of the television programme 'Man Bites Dog', wrote a score for three recorders especially for Het Oor, and this is performed by the Apsara ensemble. Pauwels' music enters into dialogue with, adds to, takes over from and associates with the text. So the music ensemble is just as important as the narrator of the story.
Het Oor is intended to make children curious about what cannot be heard (or what at first seems to be so). In this sense the work fits in seamlessly with the theme of the festival, The Construction.
