Violinist Antje Weithaas, violist Tabea Zimmermann and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, all of them big names in classical music. Ten years ago, despite their well-filled solo schedules, the three decided to form a string quartet. As second violin they chose Daniel Sepec, who also enjoys a glittering career as an orchestral musician. A fine choice, since the Arcanto Quartet is now one of the top quartets in the world. In the meantime, it has taken a permanent place in our quartet series.
This concert could be a lesson in the history of the German quartet. We kick off with Mozart's String Quartet no. 18, which he wrote after studying the quartets of Joseph Haydn. Next comes the Third String Quartet by Johannes Brahms and we end with the music of Paul Hindemith, whose Fifth Quartet consists of biting dissonances on a neo-classical pattern of fugue and passacaglia.
