Artis Quartett Wien
'Der Tod und das Mädchen' van Schubert
The Viennese Artis Quartett dissects Schubert's Quartet in D minor, D810, which is his most famous string quartet and one of his most powerful and expressive works. In the slow section he quotes his own song 'Der Tod und das Mädchen' (Death and the Maiden) based on a poem by Claudius. The whole work is permeated by a fear of death on the one hand and a longing for death on the other. During this lecture recital the Artis Quartett demonstrates how Schubert translated these feelings into music. At the end of the lecture there will be a performance of the whole work.
