Aruna Sairam en Ensemble
Traditioneel karnatisch repertoire
Aruna Sairam was born in Bombay into a family with a rich musical tradition. Her mother Smt. Rajalakshmi Sethuraman, her first teacher, initiated her into Karnatic and Hindu music. Afterwards she studied under numerous Indian masters, including T. Brinda, and developed a style of her own. Her music draws both on the rhythmic and melodic precision of Southern Indian music and on the balance and aesthetic of the music from the North. This musical quest has in fact always characterised Aruna Sairam's career. She explored early Western music, is interested in flamenco, and loves classical Western composers, in whom she sees many parallels with the Indian masters. In India she researches into forgotten compositions by Syama Sastri and Dikshitar. In addition to this she has learnt a great deal about the popular music of the Tamil, Abhang and Devarnamas. Aruna Sairam not only sings at prestigious concerts in India, but increasingly performs abroad. Her emotional but disciplined style makes her concerts an exceptional experience, even for the uninitiated.
