We knew within the first few bars that the young German Atos Trio was not just any old piano trio. In scarcely five years, they have bagged one chamber music prize after another and have evolved into a much sought after leading ensemble. Their natural virtuosity, highly inventive ability to contrast colours and energetic joy of playing makes every concert an exciting adventure.
Drawing towards the end of the Mendelssohn year, the Atos Trio will interpret his two masterly piano trios. One of Schumann's finest reviews was of the First Piano Trio, and called it "das Meistertrio der Gegenwart" (the most outstanding trio), compared it to the trios of Beethoven and Schubert and predicted that it would "continue to delight grandchildren and great-grandchildren for years to come". And indeed, after more than 150 years, it is still one of the most popular works from the chamber music repertoire. Mendelssohn's Second Piano Trio has, undeservedly, long stood in the shadow of the first. Its semi-romantic pathos, warm-blooded lyricism and sparkling virtuosity make it no less superior. The Atos Trio has finally set the record straight.
