This programme is marked by soft pastel colours. The main scene is 'D'un matin de printemps'. No, we are not talking about Renoir, but the superb musical painting of Lili Boulanger. But before you start imagining that there is such a thing as 'feminine music', Cécile Chaminade's Second Piano Trio sounds more muscular than all the 'male work' in this programme.
In his Piano Trio, we catch Claude Debussy in the midst of romantic musing. Gabriel Fauré turned quite nostalgic in his later years, but his memories are very much alive, as his Piano Trio shows: a miracle of colour, energy and contrast. Lastly, Jean Françaix draws on the most effective of male weapons: humour. An evening packed with brilliant French musical colour and refined pleasantry, performed with warmth and precision by the Atos Trio.
