World premiere of John Zorn’s new song cycle for Barbara Hannigan at DE SINGEL!
“It has changed everything”, soprano Barbara Hannigan let slip to the New York Times about Jumalattaret. This song cycle by the American composer John Zorn, inspired by the Finnish epic the ‘Kalevala’, is an absolute tour de force. Rhythmically crazy, vocally virtuoso. So impressed was John Zorn by Hannigan’s blood-curdling performance of this work that he wrote a new song cycle for her, set to texts by Emily Dickinson. At DE SINGEL you’ll experience the absolute world premiere! The young tenor Charles Sy joins Hannigan in Messiaen’s mini cantata La mort du Nombre. A dialogue between two voices, symbolising two souls who are separated from one another and express their hope of being reunited in a series of gripping recitatives and arias.
