Since their fabulous performance of 'Dido & Aeneas', the musicians of B'Rock have regularly returned to the music of Purcell. This time, they will be presenting an anthology that is actually a tour of his oeuvre highlights. Two of the most beautiful songs are both preceded by a charming instrumental piece. The magic of the English Orpheus is immediately apparent. But this is only the beginning: two masterful odes are still to come. One early, the other late. 'Why, why are all the muses mute?' was written by a young court composer with a promising future stretching out before him. 'Come ye sons of art' displays the self-confidence of a master at the height of his powers. In both works, we hear the way in which the text stimulates the composer's inventiveness. Delightful basso ostinatos underpin beautiful vocal lines, which finally give way to musical ritornellos full of wonderful harmonies. Add to this one of Purcell's most stirring closing choruses and you will know that this programme is a gourmet's feast.
