Vivaldi wrote his ode to Louis XV for Ottoboni, the French ambassador to Rome. This serenade is like a quiz: the arias, duets and trios are playful assemblages of existing music. Some by Vivaldi himself, but also by his contemporary Antonio Lotti. Yet this is not just a patchy pastiche. The score was put together with great care and impressive skill. The result is Vivaldi's largest-scale and above all best secular vocal work. Its characteristic imitation of the French style adds a delightful bonus.
