A grand piano falls from the sky, causing the instrument to break and shatter, captured in sound and vision. So begins the impressive, multimedia Piano Concerto (2014) by Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen, one of the highlights of this concert with the Basel Sinfonietta led by conductor Baldur Brönnimann.
Steen-Andersen's fragmented sound world is also featured in San Francisco Polyphony (1973/1974) by Austro-Hungarian composer György Ligeti, which sounds exactly like the soundtrack to an exciting thriller.
With Losing the Red Queen's Race (2022), Swiss composer Mauro Hertig makes the orchestra play a game it cannot win. It is a musical parody of the Red Queen hypothesis that argues that all organisms are subject to evolutionary pressures for constant adaptation and change.
British composer Julian Anderson, in turn, depicts the passing of the seasons with a rich orchestral sound and great contrasts in The Stations of the Sun (1998).
Welcome to DE SINGEL for an evening of sensational orchestral music.
