The Belcea Quartet has been on our waiting list for some time. Established in 1994 at the Royal College of London, for almost 10 years they have been at the very top. Their individual timbres mix beautifully and allow a richly variegated range of colours. A great deal of emphasis is placed on refined articulation, without losing the sense of the overall picture. Changes of tempo, mood, dynamic and timbre always occur with breathtaking precision and complete unity. Switches between styles take place flawlessly. In this concert, they alternate with uncanny ease from the early to late Beethoven, to a brand new piece by Turnage. The British Mark-Anthony Turnage (1960) is known for his jazzy rhythms and 'spicy' harmonies. The Belcea Quartet play this first ever performance of his brand new quartet 'Twisted Blues with Twisted Ballad'. This will be Turnage's first string quartet, if you don't include his earlier work for string quartet and referee whistles.
