Schubert's last string quartet is sometimes called an opera without words: its inventive structure summons up theatrical associations and he also made new use of motifs from his opera 'Fierrabras'. With its brilliant blend of oppressive restlessness and lyrical sublimity, his Fifteenth String Quartet is one of the most romantic of chamber music works.
Shostakovich too offers the listener a glimpse into the fragile depths of his soul. As if in a musical testament, in the six meditative character pieces in his Fifteenth String Quartet he muses on the turbulent course of his life.
The virtuoso British Belcea String Quartet combines original interpretations with a keen musical intelligence. So depth and quality are assured in this reading of the last confessions of two great composers.
