“Rise again, will you, my heart, in an instant!” These are the final words of Mahler’s Second Symphony ‘The Resurrection’. To announce this hopeful message in a convincing way, Mahler added a choir and two soloists. Indeed, with his symphonies his aim was to penetrate to the core of human existence, and in order to achieve this he used all the resources at his disposal. Surprising twists, biting contrasts, but also honeyed melodies. Led by chief conductor Hugh Wolff, the excellent Belgian National Orchestra has put together a gigantic line-up, and is joining forces with the Octopus Ensemble and Brussels Chamber Choir. Soloists: the Russian soprano Sofia Fomina and the American mezzo and world star Michelle DeYoung. Together they will be performing one of the greatest triumphs of classical music.
