Is there any classical concerto which, right from the first few notes, is more familiar than Haydn's Trumpet Concerto? The year is 1796. Haydn was impressed by the invention of the valve trumpet, which made a major technical improvement to the instrument. The Viennese trumpet virtuoso Anton Weidlinger used it to show off his skills. So of course a work that would match the instrument to the skilled performer was due. For the contemporary virtuoso Jeroen Berwaerts, the Trumpet Concerto is the ideal work to display his skill. Ben Haemhouts chose Mendelssohn's masterpieces to frame Haydn's work. The Overture 'Die Heimkehr aus der Fremde' is a gem of orchestral expression that fits this young and sparkling orchestra like a glove. To end we hear the fantastic Italian Symphony, a travel impression transposed into sound. The young Mendelssohn thoroughly enjoyed his time in Italy. He spent three years writing this highly accomplished musical construction. Listening to this music is sheer delight.
