Ben LaMar Gay blends jazz, electronics, and improvisation into daring musical collages.
Ben LaMar Gay is a musical jack-of-all-trades. As a composer, multi-instrumentalist and writer, he creates electro-acoustic collages with sound, colour and space. His voice and cornet are the basic ingredients for a style in which many genres coalesce, and which invariably balances between radical and inviting innovation. Gay is rooted in Chicago’s fruitful contemporary jazz scene, a member of the legendary AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) and one of the most productive members of this progressive group. He describes his unique style as 'Pan-American', an amalgam of jazz, electronics and influences from R&B, hip-hop, Tropicália and contemporary classical. Improvisation takes centre stage in everything he does. At DE SINGEL, Gay guides his ensemble through a variety of improvisation strategies, as well as playing pieces from his genre-transcending work in progress The Manipulations of Lines and Breff.
