Ben Sluijs Quartet - BassDrumBone
The compositions of Ben Sluijs and the members of BassDrumBone are uniquely crafty and at once highly animated due to their structure, rhythmics and harmonies. This is enjoyable music in the best sense of the word. There is true joy and sparkle in their performance. The music of Ben Sluijs is an exciting tour along broadly developed, rhythmically complex, but succinctly composed material and unconventionally structured and improvised passages. Sometimes it seems like an attempt to express the paradoxical feeling that mankind is not sufficiently reconciled in musical exaltation. A beautiful ballad may also be the resounding result. The eclectic BassDrumBone pursues an intangible and independent track through the world of jazz. All three are soloists and composers without equal. Their music is like a stroll through New York City of myth, where a kiss is stolen at one corner and your mugged at the next. The trio leaves no note, no phrase to chance. On the other hand, their music sounds at once spontaneous, spectacular or intimate, open or well-defined and calls for concentrated listening. Serious but nonconformist, there is no other possible conclusion.
