'Geheimnisse einer Seele' is a film about a tormented soul. In the early twentieth century, Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis was in the ascendant and raised subjects that could be depicted in films too. In this case it is the story of a couple - played by the stars Werner Krauss and Ruth Weyher - whose happiness is upset by the horrific murder of a neighbour. The husband starts having frightening dreams and murderous tendencies. He turns to a doctor for psychoanalysis of his dreams and memories. The director Georg Wilhelm Pabst created the violent dream scenes with the help of two of Freud's assistants.
This film is a new challenge for Eric Sleichim, an extension of his previous successful live performances of contemporary soundtracks for silent films. As far as the choice of musical material is concerned, he is looking for links with Alban Berg's 'Lyrical Suite', which, like the film, dates from 1926. To perform the piece, he chose the four percussionists of Blindman [drums] combined with live electronics. Excitement guaranteed.
