Brahms Happening
"Never make the mistake of doing the same thing for too long", declaimed Johannes Brahms. We have taken him up on his word and have completely changed the recipe for the composer happening. Whereas in the past a composer took centre stage for one day, this season we are devoting two days to a selection from the oeuvre of one of the very greatest.
The eleventh composer happening showcases performances of all Brahms' four symphonies by the deFilharmonie, conducted by Philippe Herreweghe. This is 'Brahms raised to the power of 4'. A retrospective format preceded by a superior selection from his chamber, song and piano collection. With classy performers such as Antje Weithaas, Silke Avenhaus and Quirine Viersen, and our home grown pride and joy, pianist Jozef De Beenhouwer. Plus the young soprano Caroline Melzer and pianist Anette Fischer-Lichdi, both of whom appear to be born for Brahms' songs. Once again, Antwerp Conservatory is also making a contribution, where we see some of Brahms' lighter side. DeSingel acts as the music society, and for the Viennese 'Gemütlichkeit' we are counting on you!
