Brett Dean is a versatile musician. Previously he was a violist at the Berliner Philharmoniker; now he is internationally active as a chamber musician, conductor, soloist and composer. In 2007 Brett Dean was glued to his radio to listen to a performance of his own String Quartet No. 1. The musicians? None other than the Doric String Quartet. Since then, Dean and the Dorics have been engaged in a close musical alliance. In Hidden Agendas Dean has the string quartet splinter beneath a barrage of musical extremes until the ensemble finally rediscovers its unity. In Beethoven’s sunny String Quartet, an underexposed masterpiece, Dean makes it crystal clear that he is a highly accomplished violist himself.
