What comes after death? Grief, unutterable loss, but also truly beautiful music. Purcell possibly wrote the 'Funeral Sentences' for the burial of his teacher Matthew Locke in 1677. They are three masterly religious meditations, sung at the graveside. As a prelude, B'Rock plays John Dowland's 'Lachrimae or Seaven Teares'. One of the true high points in English consort music.
Unlike his English fellows, Jean Gilles emphasised the light concealed in the darkness of sorrow. His superbly composed 'Requiem', full of subtle contrasts and repetitions, was at the time played at just about every major French funeral.
Vox Luminis and Lionel Meunier are unsurpassed in this repertoire. You are guaranteed to be moved by their musical intelligence and splendid choral sound.
