After a successful first collaboration on the 'Agatha' project in 2011, these two ensembles will once again be teaming up for 'Close Encounters'. Together, they will be presenting a repertoire that is traditionally only played by classical musicians. But the BJO would not be the BJO if it didn't regard this as a challenge. With music by Stravinsky, Antheil and Bernstein, the two ensembles explore each other's potential. At times, they come together in a cross-pollination that leads to a new sound, a 'Close Encounter of a New Kind'.
In 1949, Bernstein and Stravinsky wrote, respectively, 'Prelude, Fugue and Riffs' and 'Ebony Concerto' for Woody Herman's big band. The contemporary composer Marc-Anthony Turnage can frequently be heard at deSingel. His jazzy tribute to Stravinsky, 'No let up', was described by the Chicago Tribune as "Loud, cheeky and great fun" when premiered in 2004. It fits perfectly alongside the 1925 piece 'A Jazz Symphony', by child prodigy and avant-gardist George Antheil. But at this concert, you can also expect to hear existing work by BJO, as well as a brand new composition by Bert Joris for this double ensemble. It really is 'Jazz & more'.
