Jazz giant Thelonious Monk was born 100 years ago. The Brussels Jazz Orchestra will be celebrating the occasion with MONK’estra, a fantastic big-band project with Monk arrangements by John Beasley, who will be conducting for the occasion. Beasley is uniquely skilled at capturing the spirit of Thelonious Monk’s music in a fresh way: off-beat melodies and humour, strange beauty and boundless swing, seasoned with New Orleans spirit, hip hop and Afro-Cuban rhythms. In MONK’estra, Beasley explores and depicts Monk’s music with an eye to the future. The Brussels Jazz Orchestra, our national pride among international jazz orchestras, presents an affectionate tribute to the music of the grand master Monk, adding contemporary harmonies, unstoppable grooves and an infectious delight in playing.
