Gil Evans (1912-1988) was one of the greatest composers, orchestra leaders and innovators in jazz history. As an arranger he worked with Miles Davis for many years. In 2002 the Brussels Jazz Orchestra (BJO) conducted by Maria Schneider gave a brilliant performance of 'Sketches of Spain', the masterpiece by Davis and Evans, at deSingel.
As a Gil Evans specialist, the young American composer, arranger and big-band leader Ryan Truesdell tours the world with 'The Gil Evans Project'. Together with the BJO he has made an exciting choice from Evans' rich repertoire. The programme includes such well-known pieces as 'Miles Ahead' and 'So What', standards such as 'Struttin' with some barbecue' and ''Donna Lee', but also 'Avalon Town', 'Just one of those things', and many others.
