After the communist regime had been installed in Russia, the film-maker Sergei Eisenstein remained loyal to the ideals of socialism. This led to conflict with the authorities and Stalin himself. Although the leader considered Eisenstein controversial, he nevertheless commissioned him to direct a film for the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution. 'October', a moving epic, caused quite a stir: Eisenstein showed the installation of the communist regime in a raw documentary style with 'intellectual editing'.
The Brussels Philharmonic and Edwin Outwater provide a live symphonic soundtrack for the film, comprising work from the oeuvres of Soviet composers who had emigrated and/or been suppressed, including Prokofiev, Shostakovitch and Weinberg.
