"Never before have I felt so satisfied, proud and happy with a composition", stated Tchaikovsky. His 'Pathétique' dazzles with languorous outer movements and a tenacious waltz in five-four time. A mere nine days after the premiere, its creator died in suspicious circumstances. Since then, there has been much speculation about the programme that the composer did not want to make public. Is it a meditation on life and approaching death? His own requiem? A suicide note? Or the appeal of a homosexual condemned to death? His brother Modest spoke of "an exorcism in which Pjotr Ilyich drove out all the black demons that had possessed him for so long".
Come and judge for yourself. Iván Fischer and his orchestra are sure to offer an engaging interpretation.
Before the concert, you will hear the maestro Iván Fischer speak (in Dutch!). Using a range of excerpts - performed live by the orchestra - he will prepare you for the evening's programme. A unique event!
