Pianist Yuri Shadrin was born in the Russian city of Perm. As a teenager, he won one competition after another. At Moscow Conservatory, his exceptional talent was further nurtured by the monumental figures Lev Naumov and Elisso Wirssaladze. After that, he crossed the big pond to perfect his skills under the great piano guru Leon Fleisher.
For the ‘Building Bridges’ project, Shadrin has selected both well-known and less performed repertoire. In his Variations in F, Beethoven proved long before the Diabelli Variations that a nondescript little theme could challenge him to create ingenious adaptations. In his ‘Wanderer Fantasy’, Schubert too showed how he could transform a motif from a song into a virtuoso fantasy of sound. A talent that we can also discern in Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues.
