'The Man with the Camera' by the visionary Dziga Vertov (1896-1954) is more than just an amazing documentary about everyday life in Moscow. The film is also a special exponent of his Kino-Glaz film theory. It comprises a superb range of progressive film techniques, is an ode to the camera and a true flash forward to future cinema. Images of 'bread and games', of urban life and architecture are alternated with images of the production of a film ranging from the shooting to its reception by the audience. In this way Vertov shows parallels between the process of making a film and the mechanical, repetitive nature of labour. Although we have to place Vertov's oeuvre in the context of a controlled cultural policy weighed down under the Soviet regime, through self-reflection and triumphant individualism, this film transcends one's initial impression that it is propaganda.
The DJ and composer Buscemi is a great film-lover and has worked on his soundtrack with meticulous precision. The result in the studio is already impressive and played live with his band it will be an unforgettable experience.
