Were you here the last time Antje Weithaas and Camerata Bern performed in our Blue Hall? If so, you'll definitely be back. This Swiss chamber orchestra, quite unlike any other, often plays without a conductor. For some time now, it has entrusted its artistic leadership to a violinist who is dear to our hearts: Antje Weithaas.
The programme features two of Beethoven's masterpieces. The famous 'Kreutzer Sonata' is a virtuoso violin piece named after the French violinist to whom it is dedicated. In the version with piano, the work is really designed for a large concert hall, and is almost a violin concerto. This is certainly true of the version with string orchestra. The 'Quartetto Serioso' is a musical highlight of a very different kind, which completely immerses you in Beethoven's most sombre inner feelings.
Benjamin Britten wrote 'Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge' as a tribute to his former tutor. It was commissioned by the Boyd Neel Orchestra, a virtuoso string ensemble whose technical expertise he fully exploited in the score. The piece is perfectly suited to Camerata Bern.
