As regular visitors will already know, the combination of Antje Weithaas and Camerata Bern makes sparks fly. This season they return with a programme centred on ‘Sehnsucht’, an emotion that is hard to grasp and that can take many forms. Ravel sculpts a funeral monument with it, but chiefly writes ‘Le tombeau de Couperin’ as a tribute to a fallen friend. In his veiled tones, Tchaikovsky captures the pain of a love life that is doomed to failure. However the piece ends with a wild round dance, twirling around until it reaches a state of ecstatic exhaustion. This too is ‘Sehnsucht’. As is the sharp humour of Prokofiev’s First Symphony. With boyish swagger, the Russian translates Haydn’s idiom into the grotesque gallop of the early decades of the 20th century. A feast from the first note to the last!
