The piano concerto in which Mozart exchanges the effortless desire to please in his earlier concertos for lyrical sighs, human drama and a genuine zest for life. A chamber symphony that Dmitri Shostakovich wrote as a monument to himself - actually a bitter self-portrait, as it chiefly mirrors his own despair. In between, a few contrasting, deceptively simple symphonies by Haydn. All played by Camerata Salzburg, an orchestra with a rich pedigree, and accompanied by pianist Alexander Lonquich who has made Mozart’s music entirely his own. What more could a connoisseur wish for? That’s your diary filled on 9 May.
