The Polish piano virtuoso Piotr Anderszewski appears to be quite at home with the baton and in this concert with the Camerata Salzburg he combines the two talents, directing the orchestra from the keyboard.
He plays the solo parts in two of Mozart's masterly piano concertos. First of all No. 23, for which this Salzburg genius expanded his orchestral palette by the inclusion of a couple of clarinets with their melancholy sound. In addition, the programme includes polyphonic highlights by the two great classicists, Mozart and Beethoven. These are the 'Adagio and Fugue in C-minor' and the monumental 'Grosse Fuge' respectively, music in which each part takes an equal share. This is grist to Camerata Salzburg's mill, being an ensemble that has elevated transparency and 'attention to individualism in the overall sound' to the level of a musical philosophy.
